This footbridge, over 240m long, and with a 90 m curved hanging main span, is located in Zaragoza and allows the overpass of the important traffic junction in front of “Las Delicias” Station, to reach “La Almozara” Neighbourhood.
The composite access ramps, with asymmetrical piers of graceful structural form, resolve their boundary problems lying over the station structure without rivaling the building architecture. The main span, not only for length, but also for location, requires a much more “visible” structure, a “Y” on the territory between “Delicias” and “La Almozara”.
The central span is structured around the steel exempt inclined mast; 28 m high, but without exceeding the station arches height; which anchors the four main suspension cables that hold the footbridge deck. The mast backstays are needed for stability, while its strut allows transmitting only vertical loads to the deep foundations. The main cables describe non-planar spatial curves due to the footbridge curved plan path, so an iterative form-finding analysis was necessary to define the hangers, which were cut to measure. The game between the mast, the cables and the curved slender deck; integrated in the landscape through the scale, the transparency and the lightness; minimizes the visual impact of the construction, providing to the area a deep technological and high design content.
