The City of Oviedo, with the intention of settle the current communication difficulties in the new neighbourhood of La Florida, commissioned us the task of providing a pedestrian access to the West Park. The difficulty lies in the 9 m step between the neighbourhood of La Florida, at the top level, and the West Park, at the bottom, and the division created by a suburban railway line (FEVE). All this fact, made necessary to erect a new structure, which, because of being placed also in a traffic crossroads, makes necessary to design an elevated roundabout, which must overpass the train tracks, respecting the minimum clearance for it to maintain its functionality.
The solution chosen was to hang the deck. This hanging is carried out through a suspension system, anchored at the top of a mast located on the center of the elevated roundabout, and inclined towards the West Park, marking the directionality of the crossing.
The mast is held in a unique way, by ties that go towards it, not directly, but to the main suspension cable of the roundabout flying deck, which turns on itself like a loop, picking up the deck hangers and backties of the mast. These backties are anchored to a concrete counterweight located on the perimeter of the roundabout. The mast and suspension together with the counterweights have been designed as a whole, involving an internal area with a mirror of water between the mast and the counterweight.
