Arenas & Asociados’ design is selected in 1st position for the final stage in the design competition for the new bridge crossing over River Duero between Vila Nova de Gaia and Porto. Promoted by Metro do Porto, our proposal came 1st among 27 international proposals.
Our team is formed by Portuguese Edgar Cardoso and NOARQ Architects, + Arenas & Asociados. Edgar Cardoso was already the designer for the neighboring Arrabida Bridge, finished in 1963.
The proposed design is a 692 m long, 403 m main span, frame concrete bridge with variable depth. It is expected fully in concrete with semi-integral configuration. Reduced maintenance and enhanced durability are one of the main features of the proposal. The deck in the spans over the river is designed with light-weight concrete produced in Portugal. The proposal has the lowest estimated construction cost and construction duration of the finalists, with 50.2 million € and 970 days.
The design concept received the highest score among the finalists for its architectural design, integration and respect of the heritage of Arrabida bridge from a jury of renowned architects and engineers presided by Pritzker Prize architect Eduardo Souto de Moura.
