This structure, an underpass for pedestrians and vehicles, acts as a gate to the East Area of the Expo-08. It was designed as an integral bridge, in which the deck is fixed and integrated in the abutments, through the pyramidal forms or “cups”, in the base of the girders.
The girder’s deck presents a variable triangular section which changes its depth from the abutments to the mid-span, generating those characteristic ruled surfaces. The whole construction is formed by four elements; two for traffic, and two for the walkways, on the outer sides; that with 45 meters of width, make possible the coexistence of vehicles and pedestrians.
The aesthetic result stands out for the natural lighting, which comes in between the independent decks, and lights the inside vaults. Also, the texture of the concrete in abutments is chosen to emphasize the concrete volumes and its variable geometry.
The final design is an elegant answer to the functional requirements, with an equivalent form language to the attached Third Millennium Bridge, also designed by our team.
