The project, commissioned by the Ministry of Public Works Cantabria Delegation, involved the construction of a pedestrian path and bicycle lane that connects the neighbourhoods of Nueva Montaña and Raos in Santander, crossing over the A-67 motorway.
The footbridge connects on the North directly to the bicycle lane of Nueva Montaña, projected by Santander's City Council. The connection is made by a landing square.
On the South bound, the footbridge connects to the Raos bike lane, Camargo's Council project, through a pedestrian and cycle path which crosses under the existing structure of the A-8 motorway.
The pedestrian and cycle bridge, has a length of 210 m, with a central steel structure span of 106 m. Two reinforced concrete ramps with a 6% slope and 43 (North) and 61 m (South) serve as access structures. Ramps and footbridge have a slightly curved layout to adapt itself to the crossing and landings constraints. It was mandatory to produce the minimum affection to the existing infrastructures; maintaining the distances and the required clearances.
The footbridge has a useful width of 3.20 m, with coexistence of pedestrian and cycle traffic. This width is considered sufficient, comprised between the strict width of 2 m from an only pedestrian walkway or cycle path, and the 4 m of a pedestrian and cycle traffic segregated structure. As the coexistence of traffic is the general trend in Europe, the adopted solution agrees with this fact and also adapts itself to the for Raos' bicycle lane project.
