The surrounded area where this new bridge is placed in, of great natural beauty, determines the project design. A contained structure in height, integrated on Pisuerga river banks, with a constructive procedure that preserves the river conditions during execution.
The distribution of spans of the bridge is forced by the terrain, and is the basis of the designed solution. A central span of 90 m was necessary to cross the river, and the compensation span on the left bank could not exceed 30 m. In addition, the solution should minimize the deck depth in order to fulfil the water requirements and also allow the pedestrian transit under the bridge in both river banks. With such conditions, the solution is a sophisticated hybrid structural system that combines the central composite span with the side pre-stressed concrete spans, for a total length of 194 m and the following distribution: 19+25+30+90+30 m.
The reasons for using a composite steel-concrete box for the central span are constructive, technical, aesthetical and economical. Its flotation and uplifting make the solution highly industrialized, minimizing environmental impact.
The wide cross section, of 27.4 m, is divided into two 3.50 m lanes with landscaped strips on both sides, in order to separate acoustic and visually the bicycle lane traffic with the extensive pedestrian areas, which are designed as long walks on the river, green living areas of high architectural quality above Pisuerga River.
